A native learning app for iOS and Android, engineered to pass app-store payment policy by design.

The Hurbad learning experience in a native app: courses, video lessons, quizzes, diplomas and certificates, with offline-tolerant data and automated enforcement of store payment rules.

Hurbad Mobile

The context.

Most Hurbad students learn on their phones. A responsive website works, but a native app gives faster navigation, notifications, and a learning experience that survives a weak or interrupted connection.

Apple and Google both restrict how apps that sell digital content elsewhere may mention prices or link to outside payment. Hurbad sells courses on its website, so the app had to be designed around those rules from the start.

The challenge

What made it hard.

01

Store payment policy

An app may not show prices, purchase buttons or links that steer users to an outside checkout for digital content sold elsewhere. A single stray link can block a release.

02

Unreliable connectivity

Students move between mobile data and Wi-Fi, often on limited plans. The app has to stay usable when the network drops.

03

Protecting paid content

Video lessons are the product. Screen recording during playback had to be prevented on device.

04

Keeping pace with the platform

The app shares its back end with the web platform, so every change on one side must keep the other working.

Our approach

How we solved it.

  1. 01

    A reader app by design

Following the model used by large streaming and e-book apps, the app shows only content the student already owns. Prices, purchase buttons and checkout links were removed from every screen.

  2. 02

Policy enforced by an automated test

A test walks every screen and component and fails the build on any price, purchase wording or outside payment link. It was proven by re-inserting a price and watching it fail, and it caught two leaks a manual review had missed.

  3. 03

    Offline-tolerant data

Course data is cached on the device and persisted between sessions, with connectivity detection, so the app opens and navigates without a network.

  4. 04

    Secure by default

Sign-in tokens are kept in the device’s secure storage, and screen capture is blocked during video playback.
